My innate observational tendencies were further informed by my background in the sociological and psychological sciences, having studied both at undergraduate and graduate levels.

This strong foundational bent was deepened further within weeks of starting to photograph in 1975. While walking a suburban street looking for pictures a simple but powerful intuitive message gave me permanent bearing: “Photograph what is in front of you!" This ridiculously obvious idea electrified my picture making and stimulated a life long commitment to create a visual diary exploring the ongoing "now moments" of actuality within my reach.

I spent much of my youth moving through vast open spaces, driving trucks, tractors and heavy machinery on my parent’s Iowa farm. Photographic exploration while moving across open roads, streets, and public places is a natural extension of that indelible experience.

Early experiences include photographing my rural Midwest family of origin and environs. And completing photographic survey projects in Wisconsin in black and white with public art grant funding expanded my aesthetics. A twenty year freelance photography business doing a very vast range of commercial, advertising, public relations and portraiture work drilled my technical and observational skills deeper.

After leaving commercial and assignment photography in the year 2000 I have passionately embraced making color photograph with digital equipment in the street, a place of infinite possibilities for spontaneous improvisation solving untold challenging technical problems endemic to that milieu.

I live in New York City and southwest Florida, traveling frequently to experience my view of the world.
